SUMMARY:Field Visit – Koralaipattu Division
DESCRIPTION:On 20 February 2026\, the HOPE Organization team conducted a field visit to the Koralaipattu Division as part of the implementation process of the Cyclone Ditwah Emergency Response and Resilience Support in Sri Lanka project. The visit commenced with a coordination meeting with World Vision staff\, during which a pre-planning discussion was held to align on upcoming project activities and ensure effective collaboration. Following this discussion\, the team proceeded to the Divisional Secretariat\, where at 10.00 AM they met with the Divisional Secretary (DS). During the meeting\, the project was formally introduced\, including its objectives\, implementation plan\, target beneficiaries\, and selection criteria. The DS was comprehensively briefed on the planned field-level activities\, and official permission was obtained to implement the project within the Koralaipattu Division. The formal request letter was also handed over to the DS office. Subsequently\, a facilitator selection interview was conducted to recruit field-level facilitators to support project implementation in the division. The interview panel comprised representatives from HOPE Organization and World Vision. Out of five candidates who attended the interview\, three facilitators were successfully selected to assist with field-level project activities.

SUMMARY:Facial Trainning
DESCRIPTION:The beautician productivity training program was conducted over a three-month period\, targeting women who have been deserted by their husbands\, who made up nearly three-fourths of the total trainees and participated in the program with great enthusiasm. The training focused on livelihood development and included skills such as sari draping\, facials\, eyebrow shaping\, hair dressing\, and shaving techniques. Following the training\, some beneficiaries secured employment in established beauty salons\, while others engaged in beautician work from their homes. In addition to vocational training\, the program supported self-sustainability through home gardening initiatives. The organization “HOPE” provided vegetable seeds such as brinjal\, okra\, finger chilies\, green chilies\, and leafy greens\, along with seedlings including coconut and pomegranate. A seminar on home gardening was also conducted to educate beneficiaries on effective gardening practices\, promoting long-term food security and income generation.

SUMMARY:Relief Projects
DESCRIPTION:The Divisional Secretariat areas of Trincomalee District include several villages living under deplorable conditions\, where families struggle to meet basic needs such as food due to poverty\, unemployment\, rising commodity prices caused by fuel price increases\, lockdowns\, and continuous transport restrictions. Many households depend entirely on guardians or parents who are daily wage earners and are now unable to work\, while families caring for members with severe cerebral palsy face extreme vulnerability and require special assistance. During the third wave of COVID-19\, Trincomalee became one of the most affected districts after Colombo and Gampaha\, with widespread infections reported not only in town and gravets areas but also across multiple Divisional Secretariats\, leading to curfews\, isolation\, and worsening conditions for children\, the elderly\, pregnant and lactating mothers. Daily wage workers\, rural poor\, migrant workers\, and seasonal laborers have lost all income opportunities\, forcing many to return to villages without work or support. In response\, HOPE requests emergency relief assistance to support 100 of the most vulnerable families—particularly women-headed households and primary breadwinners—through the distribution of 200 food packs in the T and G Divisional Secretariat areas\, in coordination with the Trincomalee District Secretariat/GA Office and in compliance with COVID-19 safety guidelines. The intervention includes identifying and approving beneficiary lists\, procuring and packing food items with government approval\, and distributing them at designated locations. As a government-approved local NGO\, HOPE will coordinate closely with district authorities\, manage procurement\, ensure visibility\, conduct distributions\, and submit reports\, while monitoring will be carried out jointly by HOPE and government officials\, with progress reviewed through financial\, narrative\, and photographic reporting in line with official guidelines.

SUMMARY:Disabilities Day
DESCRIPTION:(1) The ProblemHOPE Organization currently supports nearly 80 children with disabilities (PWDs) in the Trincomalee District\, working to bring their needs\, abilities\, and rights to the attention of the state\, other organizations\, and society at large. These children face multiple and overlapping challenges\, including physical and intellectual impairments\, poverty\, social insecurity\, discrimination\, gender inequality\, lack of awareness within families and communities\, and limited access to essential services. Many families struggle to provide adequate healthcare\, nutrition\, education\, and emotional support due to economic hardship\, which has been further intensified by national economic crises and natural calamities. Social stigma and exclusion continue to isolate children with disabilities\, denying them equal participation in community life and limiting their legal and social rights. The proposed project seeks to address these issues by ensuring that the daily needs and health conditions of children with disabilities are met within their family and community environments; by promoting their happiness\, safety\, and emotional well-being; by guiding them toward positive behavior and social interaction to reduce isolation; by advocating for and safeguarding their legal rights at family\, community\, and state levels; and by providing both direct and indirect support to children and their families. This project is highly relevant as it directly responds to the social\, economic\, and cultural barriers faced by children with disabilities in Trincomalee\, promoting inclusion\, dignity\, and equal opportunities while strengthening families and raising community awareness. \n(2) The SolutionTo achieve these objectives\, HOPE will organize and celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities as a major community-centered event in Trincomalee. This annual celebration will serve as a platform to showcase the talents\, creativity\, and abilities of children with disabilities\, thereby challenging stereotypes and promoting positive attitudes within society. The project activities will include planning meetings with staff to design the program; a three-week fundraising campaign to mobilize resources; purchasing essential items\, gifts\, and event materials; arranging the public hall\, invitations\, and guest participation; and conducting training sessions for children to prepare performances that highlight their skills in arts\, culture\, and other creative expressions. The main event will be conducted on December 23rd\, with participation from children\, families\, community leaders\, government officials\, well-wishers\, and partner organizations. Direct beneficiaries of this project are the 80 children with disabilities supported by HOPE and their families\, while indirect beneficiaries include community members\, local authorities\, and the wider public who will gain awareness about disability rights and inclusion. The project will be implemented in Trincomalee District over a preparation period of approximately one month\, culminating in the final event. Through awareness sessions\, social interaction\, and public advocacy during the celebration\, the project will promote child rights\, encourage community engagement\, and foster long-term support networks for children with disabilities. \n(3) Impact of the Proposed ProjectThe proposed project will create meaningful social impact by transforming community attitudes toward persons with disabilities and promoting inclusion and equality. It will help reduce stigma and isolation by giving children a public platform to express their talents and abilities\, empowering them with confidence and a sense of belonging. Families will feel encouraged and supported\, strengthening their capacity to care for and advocate for their children. Increased public awareness will contribute to reducing gender-based discrimination and social inequalities while promoting respect for the rights of children with disabilities. The project will also enhance cultural and social understanding among families and community members\, encouraging collective responsibility for inclusive development. In the long term\, this initiative will contribute to HOPE’s mission of building an inclusive society where children with disabilities live with dignity\, equal opportunities\, and full participation. By strengthening advocacy\, increasing community engagement\, and promoting social justice\, the project will lay a foundation for sustainable change and continued empowerment of persons with disabilities in Trincomalee.

The program also encouraged teamwork and peer learning by organizing participants into small working groups\, further strengthening their confidence and productivity.

SUMMARY:Cake Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The objective of the program was to empower women affected by war under deplorable conditions and women with disabilities in the post-pandemic context. A 10-day cake-making productivity training program was conducted with the selection of beneficiaries and support from local resource persons. The training covered practical skills including butter cake preparation\, chocolate making\, vegetable cake baking\, cupcake making\, date cake preparation\, and icing techniques. Following the training\, two participants secured employment at Everest Cake Shop\, while another volunteer obtained work at a local bakery. Additionally\, some beneficiaries were able to generate income by preparing cakes from their homes. To support self-employment\, the “HOPE” organization distributed essential tools such as cake trays\, beaters\, and nozzles\, enabling beneficiaries to continue their livelihoods independently.

SUMMARY:Evening Classes
DESCRIPTION:The proposed project aims to improve educational opportunities and reduce poverty among vulnerable children in the Trincomalee District\, particularly in the Town and Gravets\, Muthur (especially Ralkuli and Thoppur)\, and the villages of Kanniya and Varothayanagar. The beneficiaries include children from low-income families\, widows’ families\, and children with disabilities (PWDs) who face serious challenges such as transportation difficulties\, economic hardship\, and limited access to educational support. A total of 162 children have been identified through social analysis\, including 68 children from two particularly vulnerable villages. Due to ongoing economic difficulties\, many children with disabilities risk becoming dependent on the government or relatives if their education is not properly supported; therefore\, this project focuses on providing structured evening classes\, educational guidance\, and continuous care to ensure they can progress academically and build independent futures. Nutritional support will also be provided\, especially for physically weak children\, alongside activities such as music therapy to promote both physical and emotional well-being. Supporting siblings’ education is also considered important\, as it strengthens the overall stability of the family. The project will be monitored and evaluated by appointed officers\, and a full-time caretaker-cum-administrator will oversee the functioning of the learning center to ensure quality and sustainability. Evidence from previous monitoring shows that students attending evening classes demonstrate improved academic performance\, better use of time and energy\, and relief from the financial burden of private tuition. Additionally\, participation in structured educational activities fosters positive peer interaction\, reduces exposure to social risks such as drugs and harmful influences\, and nurtures leadership qualities. In the long term\, the project will empower children to become responsible citizens and future community leaders\, thereby creating lasting social and economic benefits for their families and the wider society.

SUMMARY:Palmyra Products Making
DESCRIPTION:Aathimoddai is one of the villages severely affected by Sri Lanka’s internal conflict that lasted for over 30 years\, resulting in widespread displacement\, loss of livelihoods\, and the death of many family leaders. As a consequence\, numerous households are now single-headed\, with women serving as the primary breadwinners\, while many youths have lost opportunities for education and stable employment. Children’s schooling was also disrupted\, as families who migrated to towns for safety were unable to return to their homes. In this challenging context\, local NGOs bear a vital responsibility to introduce livelihood skills aligned with current socio-economic and cultural needs. Accordingly\, HOPE initiated a three-month Palmyrah products training program\, with the selection of beneficiaries and support from local resource persons\, following approval from the Palmyrah Development Board. Through the training\, beneficiaries learned to produce items such as sulagu\, neethu pesddi\, mats\, and fruit baskets\, which were used for domestic purposes as well as income generation. Trainees sold their products through the Palmyrah Development Board and to tourists in areas such as Ralkuli\, while the program also included the submission of results and cultural activities\, laying the foundation for sustainable domestic and future industrial-level income generation.

DESCRIPTION:The Home Gardening Project – 2022 implemented by HOPE Organization in Trincomalee\, Sri Lanka\, aims to empower 100 vulnerable women\, including widows\, female-headed households\, breadwinners\, and women with disabilities (PWDs)\, by promoting sustainable home gardening to strengthen household food security and improve family nutrition. The beneficiaries come from families severely affected by decades of civil conflict\, limited rehabilitation support\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, and the 2022 economic and political crisis\, which resulted in high inflation\, food shortages\, fuel scarcity\, increased transportation costs\, and widespread poverty that forced many families to reduce or skip meals. In response to rising food prices and malnutrition\, the project organizes beneficiaries into four Self-Help Groups (SHGs) of 25 members each\, with group leaders guiding gardening practices and small-scale marketing of surplus produce. Participants receive training and guidance on home gardening techniques\, traditional cultivation methods\, water management\, and sustainable practices\, along with the provision of vegetable seeds and limited agricultural inputs. The project promotes environmentally friendly approaches such as compost preparation at household level and the use of natural insecticides made from local herbs like neem. With available land space around their homes and access to basic water sources\, families are encouraged to cultivate vegetables and nutritious crops for daily consumption and income generation\, thereby reducing dependency\, improving nutritional standards\, and building long-term resilience within vulnerable communities in Trincomalee.
